After IEM Cologne Major 2026, Counter-Strike 2 has a strong case as the leading tactical FPS esport in viewership. The Cologne Major did not just perform well - it broke Counter-Strike records.
The grand final between Team Falcons and FURIA pushed the event to more than 2.75 million peak viewers, making it the most popular Counter-Strike tournament ever recorded by Esports Charts. Cologne also crossed 100 million hours watched and set a new benchmark for average viewership, showing that the interest was not limited to one viral final.
Compared with that, VALORANT Masters London 2026 was successful, but clearly smaller. The event passed 1.06 million peak viewers, became the most-watched Masters event of 2026, and delivered a strong final between Leviatán and Paper Rex. That is not a failure. For a younger esport, those numbers are still serious.
But the gap is obvious. CS2’s Major peak was more than double London’s, and even VALORANT’s historic highs still sit below Cologne 2026. Counter-Strike also benefited from huge storylines: NiKo finally winning a Major, Falcons’ superteam run, FURIA reaching the final, and Cologne’s status as one of esports’ most iconic arenas.
Still, “for now” matters. VALORANT has a younger ecosystem, strong regional fanbases and China remains difficult to measure accurately because many platforms use popularity indexes instead of transparent viewer counts.
The honest conclusion: CS2 won this round clearly. But the war is not over - and having both games pulling million-viewer events is a win for tactical FPS esports.
